The Different Global Religions – Part 1
Believe it or not there are actually over four thousand religions in the world, this figure is obtained from an independent body called Adherents who are a non-religious organization. The work this organization perform is dividing religions into religious bodies, churches, faiths, cultures and tribes.
However, almost three quarters of the world’s population practice one of five of the great religions. Namely Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism and Hinduism. The two largest religions are Christianity and Islam and between them they have over half of the world’s population affiliated to them. By comparison, if all the people in the world that do not follow religion were counted as one body, it would total the third largest.
One of the biggest misconceptions of the Western World is that most followers of Islam are Arabs. This is completely untrue, most Islamic people do not live in the Arabic countries. Up to 2017 the five most popular religions were: Christianity at 2.1 Billion, Islam at 1.3 Billion, Secular one Billion, Hinduism nine hundred million, and Chinese Traditional three hundred and ninety five million.
In this blog we look at some of the most popular religions around the globe, which will include Christianity and Islam as well as Buddhism, Hinduism and New Age Spirituality. We will briefly describe their beliefs and what a follower may gain from each religion.
The fundamental belief of Hindus is Brahman, the being of ultimate oneness that is represented through many deities. Such gods are associated with rivers, animals, gurus, temples and idols. In a way the religion is very close to Buddhism because Hindus believe that their current position is as a result of a past life. And this can explain suffering and pain in this life for evil deeds that were conducted in a former past life.
Their goal is to become eventually free from the laws of karma and not to be a part of the wheel of continuous reincarnations. To finally be at rest and the soul can through off the shackles of rebirth.
New Age Spirituality
New Age Spirituality is all about the self, and how a person can develop their own divinity or power. A god in this religion is not somebody that may have created the universe but is a higher level of consciousness within the self. Therefore, an individual pursuing development of the spirit could possibly see themselves as some sort of deity. Everything that person experiences, sees, listens to, or feels is also considered divine.
This religion embraces many other religions, and is actually a collection of spiritual traditions. It acknowledges multiple gods and at the center of it all is the Earth which is viewed as the source of all spirituality. It believes that the self has power of all and there is no other reality other than what one determines. In part two we continue this blog looking at other great religions around the world.
